Our second installment will be spearheaded by intergalactic techno wizard Space Dimension Controller. His latest EP, Exostack, on the mighty R&S records epitomises his ability to expertly intertwine elements of funk with contemporary electronic elements. The Belfast native counts these sounds on his palette, along with a myriad of other tools. Chugging acid, haunting synths and astral pads all populate Jack Hamill’s live sets, which are a journey in every sense of the word.

As well as showcasing his live show, Space Dimension Controller will also be stepping up to the decks with Hypercolour & Aus Music favourite Tom Demac. The duo will be lining up for a b2b which could end up anywhere, with both artists well known for their genre hopping. Classic Trance anyone?

MinimalViolence

Minimal Violence, who provided a remix for the Exostack EP, will also be joining us. The Canadian duo’s hardware jams have found a home on 1080p, First Second Label and Jungle Gym Records. Question Time with Willy Mac and Juju & Jordash...

It’s time to begin a new chapter. Origins Live. Since our inception in a dingy cellar bar in Bath, we’ve been on an unforgettable journey, hosting some of the world’s best DJs at our parties. Moving into our fifth year, we will curate a series of truly unique experiences by welcoming revered live acts to the Origins booth.

The Inaugural Origins Live centres around the supreme talents of Juju & Jordash. Exclusively using hardware to create music, their live shows are fully immersive and improvised as the duo meticulously shepherd the emotion of the room. Their often abstract techno productions have seen a slew of releases on Dekmantel and Rush Hour Recordings, with their latest offering showcasing live jams recorded in tha club. The duo have also garnered fans from their esteemed releases on Workshop as Magic Mountain High with the genius that is Move D. Synergy.

Our editor in chief, Willy Mac (leader of the free world and Facebook groups), recently sat in with Juju & Jordash to gain some insight ahead of this weekends show, celebrated by Resident Advisor as one of the Pick's of parties in London...

Willy: Hey Guys, So How did you meet? Was it friends at first sight?

Gal: We met through a mutual contrabass player friend, Ilya, and use to jam a lot the three of us - piano , bass and guitar, we became friends quickly. Jordan and Ilya released a record together last year as Mei Tahat !

image2 (1).JPG

Willy: ah nice, it’s clear that you guys have an extensive musical background. I've always wanted to get more into Live. Tell us about your live setup?

Gal: The core of our setup is a tr909&606, an sh101, a polysynth such as a juno60 or jx3p, a korg poly800 II, a digi synth such as the roland d50 and lately the volca fm as well and a bunch of effects.

Willy: Wow loads of gear!! Favourite synth?

Gal: Yamaha DX7

Jordan: Yamaha cs30

Willy: I shall pretend I know what that is… :) Do you have an idea of what you want to do beforehand or is it totally improvised?

Gal: Its all improvised in the moment, aside from perhaps the first couple of minutes which we set up roughly during soundcheck so there is some sounds to start with.

Willy: Impressive! Outside of Juju & Jordash, do you have other musical focuses?

Jordan: Magic Mountain High (J&J with Move D), The Mulholland Free Clinic (J&J with legends Jonah Sharp and Move D) and I have some solo stuff under the name Jordan GCZ and a few other collaborations on my label, Off Minor.

Willy: Love Magic Mountain High, you guys rock it on stage!! Has Move D ever spilled wine on your hardware?

Gal: Nope, the man takes care of his wine.

Willy: A man of fine tastes no doubt…How have you found the crowds playing parties in the UK compared in the past?

Gal: Hard to tell, each night is a complete new story really!

Willy: Very true, so what was the craziest party you’ve played?

Jordan: maybe this huge warehouse party in Moscow a few years ago

Willy:Lastly, who would you say has the best hair?

Jordan: ME!!!

Willy: We’ll have to make our own judgements on the hair this Saturday!

Origins Presents, The Black Madonna 06.04.18

Ranked in the top 10 DJs on the globe by RA readers, The Black Madonna is another bonafide star we are excited to usher into the Origins booth. A native of Chicago, the city which gave birth to house music, she cut her teeth alongside some of the genres’ undisputed legends.

13969709.jpg

In 2012 the revered ‘Smart Bar’ offered her a residency alongside the late, great Frankie Knuckles and 90’s pioneer Derrick Carter. Her mastery behind the decks and progressive ideas quickly saw her instated as the venues first Creative Director, where she ignited a new era of success for the club.

It was from this platform The Black Madonna built her international success. An equally strong figure both in and out of the DJ booth, she is a key figure leading the way against male dominance in electronic music. To put things in perspective, she is the only female in RA’s top 20. Her path to the top was no easy one.

While still calling Smart Bar home, TBM has been entertaining dancefloors across the globe in between a residency at London’s XOYO. We’ve been trying to pin down a date for some time, and it’s a pleasure to host her in lil’ old Bath. Her blend of uplifting disco gems and house classics, with a sprinkling of left field oddities, are going to keep you lot bumping all night.

Equality is Normality

Music is still a male dominated industry.

As a result of this, there’s a lot of talk about about inequality in music, and how valid it is. In a world surrounded by all male line ups, it's often thought an equal booking policy is 'forward thinking' whereas is should be 'normal thinking'. We must work together to tackle the unbalanced nature of our industry, there are so many fantastic female artists and it is our responsibility to bring them to the forefront.

Everyone is accountable. As promoters, we have the ability to deliver a message of equality to our dancers. That message is “Music is powerful. It's a language that is accepting of everyone EVERYONE, for a few hours we forget the problems of the world, we are allowed to close our eyes and experience something special. A story, delivered by beautiful artists.“

We would like to think of ourselves as a forward thinking brand, however this was not a forward thinking line up, this was simply a line up of talented musicians.

Thank you for joining and exploring it with us. The Origins Sound lives on.

From the Origins Family.

Origins presents Dinky [Crosstown Rebels / Ostgut Ton]

SUPPORT -   ARMAND & RESIDENTS

4TH MARCH | 2100 - 0300 | MICK'S GARAGE, LONDON

dinky.jpeg

Having found our London home in the E9 warehouse that is Mick’s Garage, we are proud to present another stellar international guest who will be providing an explosive evening of auditory delights.

Alongside her contemporary Ricardo Villalobos, our guest Dinky has been a forerunner in the Chilean underground scene since the early noughties. Her ascent to the pinnacle of electronic music began in the world of dance, studying ballet as an adolescent before continuing her education in New York. It was in the Big Apple where she began developing her production and mixing prowess which has earned her regular slots at internationally revered clubs DC-10, Contact Tokyo and a decade spanning residency at Panorama Bar.

In 2005 Dinky was signed to Sven Vaths monolith Cocoon Recordings with ‘Acid In My Fridge’. The track became a massive hit, mesmerising dancefloors across the globe. Never resting on her laurels, Dinky is equally adept behind the microphone, providing vocals for her own productions while being scouted for other artists projects. Combined with her training in jazz piano and classical guitar, we will be witnessing a true multi-instrumentalist at work.

In recent years Dinkys most recognisable creations have featured on Visionquest, Crosstown Rebels and Ostgut Ton. Falling Angel was a mainstay in most deejays bags back in ‘13 with its haunting vocals and melancholy chords which tantalized partygoers. Her 2016 album on Crosstown Rebels, an ode to the birth her two sons which saw her take a hiatus from her relentless touring schedule, was a deeply personal LP oozing with euphoric moments. Together with her husband, Matthew Styles, Dinky now operates a studio in Berlin where she continues honing her craft.

2017 is the year where Dinky writes a new chapter in the booth, join her.

Previous Origins guests have included Daniel Bortz, Bambounou, Joy Orbison, Bicep, Hunee & More.

Origins Spring Series 2017

Honey Dijon, Helena Hauff, Peggy Gou.

BATH, UK.

2017 will mark our fifth year of throwing parties, and we have learned a thing or two in our time.  To kick the year off with with a bang, we have curated a series celebrating femininity in the House & Techno scene. Three exquisite headliners at the top of their game will be soundtracking the revelry - all the stops will be pulled to make this our best series yet.

On January 27th, we welcome Honey Dijon to the DJ booth. Equally adept at lighting up a catwalk or the dancefloor, she blends sounds from her native Chicago with her new residence New York City and beyond, delivering consistently tantalising sets. Honey drew inspiration from Chi-town legends Ron Hardy, Frankie Knuckles and Cajmere - but it was NY spinner Danny Tenaglia who convinced her to take up the craft. Her prowess on production has been well documented, with releases on the seminal Nervous Recordings, Toolroom Trax and her recent output on Derrick Carter and Luke Solomons’ Classic.

There aren’t many artists out there who increased their profile in the past 12 months than Helena Hauff. On February the 9th, she will be bringing her unique fusion of bubbling 303s, hard hitting EBM and intergalactic electro to Komedia. Having hosted the eclectic mix of of Bicep, Hunee & Ame at the reclaimed theatre, we are dying to hear The Hauff fill the cavernous expanse with some thundering techno. Originally scouted by Actress, Helena was quickly signed to his Werkdiscs imprint. Her production methods are meticulous, using only analogue equipment and recording to single reels of tape. It’s easy to see why her output has that raw edge that most artists can only dream of.

Rounding off the series is Korean deep house don Peggy Gou. Picking up music at the age of eight, she switch her focus from classical compositions to club tracks around half a decade ago. Perfecting her methods in London and Berlin, Peggy has now found herself releasing on revered imprints Ninja Tune and Phonica White, showing off her ability to delicately craft emotive house as well as up front body music. Peggy is a trailblazer in her native Korea, where underground music is yet to take a foothold, and she aims to become the first female hailing from her native Korea to grace the booth in Berghain. We don’t see anything stopping her.

Origins Presents Bambounou | 10.12.16

Origins presents Bambounou - Feat. Armand, Trebor, Lex & Lean

10.12.16 | 2100 - 0300 | MICK'S GARAGE, LONDON, UK.

Origins is bringing The Better Sound back to Mick’s Garage. Hot off our fourth birthday celebrations with Innervision’s own Âme, we welcome Parisien Techno prodigy Bambounou. At 25, he is already known across the globe for an off kilter brand of Techno that bought him entry into the 50 Weapons contingent.

CzPCrvdWEAAS-Q0.jpg

Uncompromising yet equally mesmerising, Bambounou has developed a level of depth to his productions that is usually reserved for much older musicians. His ability to craft aggressive body music balanced with subtle melodic undertones sets him apart from the herd. The recent EP with Margaret Dygas didn’t go unnoticed, as he flexed his ability to mix it with the best.

While 2016 is yet to see a release from Jéremy Guindo-Zegiestowski, his intense touring schedule has up made for it. He has graced DJ booths in all four corners of the earth, from China to Morocco via Canada. Throw in his recent appearance on Radio 1 and its easy to see the future is bright for an artist who is ascending to the peak of his powers.

To ensure we experience the full sonic range of Bambounou, we will be installing a Funktion One at Micks - buckle up. Joining in on the action will be Origins old timers, Armand, Trebor and the troublesome duo Lex & Lean.

Micks, operated by Craft Brewery, are well known in Hackney for their excellent range of BBQ style food and (the clue is in the name) craft beers - with a stack of other beverages on offer. The venue is coming into its own as an events space, and with this soundsystem controlled by one of Techno’s rising stars, it’s sure to be one hell of a party.

Previous Guests include Huxley, Locked Groove, Yasmin, B-Traits, Blonde, Sidney Charles, Bicep, Skream, Moxie & Denis Sulta.

Origins HALLOWEEN SPECIAL - DANIEL BORTZ & LOCKED GROOVE

SUPPORT -   NVWLS, ARMAND, TREBOR, ONDA, LEAN & RESIDENTS

29.10.16 | 1400 - 0300 | MICK'S GARAGE, LONDON, UK.

Origins was born in the basement of recently lost pub in Bath. It now has 4 years and over 50 sold out shows under it’s belt, including a series of events in Shanghai. Always keen to push on, Origins are throwing their most ambitious party ever, with international headliners Daniel Bortz & Locked Groove playing alongside a slew of talented local support.

danielbortz.jpeg

German Daniel Bortz began filling out his discography in 2008, and has since released on esteemed labels such as Innervisions, Suol & Pastamusik. His track ‘Steady Note’ was one of the tunes of 2015, vibrating dance floors worldwide and sending shazammers wild. His sets speak to your mind; deep, dark and ominous.

lockedgroove.jpeg

Locked Groove burst onto the scene with two releases on Scuba’s label, Hotflush, but it was his first LP on the imprint in ‘13 which really lifted this producers’ career into another stratosphere. Much Like Bortz, his music will draw you in and allow you to lose yourself in dark corridors of thought. Together, these two are ready to teleport revellers into another dimension - perfect for Halloween.

nvwls.jpeg

London crew NVWLS throw some of the cities’ most vibrant parties, with the trio inviting the likes of Shanti Celeste, Kornel Kovacs & Marshall Jefferson to join them behind the decks. Sometimes you think they have been playing together since their days in nappies - such synergy in the booth.

Origins has always been more than music. Mick’s Garage will be transformed into a weird and wonderful den of iniquity where you will not only lose yourself in the beats, but in our eerie installations and mind warping decorations. And yes, there will be treats too.

The Better Sound.
