Anunaku Mix

Joining us for Tapes #95 is Anunaku, the pseudonym of Italian electronic musician and producer TSVI. Anunaku's music is characterised by its fusion of traditional and contemporary sounds, drawing influences from various genres such as techno, bass music, and musical styles from different parts of the world.

His productions often incorporate intricate percussion patterns, atmospheric textures, and hypnotic rhythms. In 2019, Anunaku released his debut EP, "Whities 026," on London-based label Whities (now AD 93). The EP received critical acclaim and was praised for its innovative sound and unique approach to rhythm and melody. Since then he's released several EPs as well as started a project together with Avalon Emerson as A+A.

Hey Anunaku, thanks so much for being a part of Origins Tapes! Can you introduce yourself in 3 words?

Positive, contemplative, reserved.

Tell us about the mix - what’s the ideal setting to listen to it?

I feel like the best setting to listen to this mix is when you get ready for a night out with your friends or, just uplifting feel good tunes to get you in a good mood, that is what has been my vibe lately with the Anunaku project.

You produce & DJ under a few different aliases - tell us about these projects and how you separate them.

Ok so TSVI has been my main project since 2014 and it has always focused on experimenting with different sounds and bpms without any limitation, with it I try to push sonics forward which is reflected in both my productions and DJ sets. I would say the output can be a bit unpredictable, I’m into so much music and I get bored of a specific sound very quickly so my influences can vary within short periods of time.

With Anunaku (my most recent project), I’m just having fun making stuff that people can easily listen/dance to. The bpm is set between 125 to 132, drum patterns are as linear as possible, often with a 4x4 kick, and I do long arrangements. To me this division in my head makes sense, but I get that at first people were a bit confused by this, hopefully not anymore now that both projects have a decent amount of releases out.

Let’s discuss your label/party, Nervous Horizon -  the label has quickly become known for showcasing the breadth of UK club sounds, as well as drawing from global percussion-based music. Can you tell us about these influences and where they come from?

The aim with the label has always been to create a unique sound that brings together different cultures and genres, and this is reflected in the music we release. For us tracks have to be functional and make the most impact in a club setting, so that's where the focus on percussion comes from.

You’ve got a string of releases on AD93 including collaborative EPs with Lorainne James & Avalon Emerson. How did these projects come about and how do you choose how to collaborate with them?

Most of my collaborations start with a friendship and a genuine artistic admiration for one another. I just really like to make music with other people. It always excites me to see the way they make music, their process or what synth they use. With Loraine and Avalon, we got in the studio to just have fun and write music, with zero pressure to make anything really.

Can you describe your ideal club night?

Dark smokey club with a good sound system and an open-minded crowd.

Lastly, where can we expect to see you next?

Lots of exciting gigs are coming up, the ones that I look forward to the most are Primavera Sound Madrid and Dekmantel this summer.
