Hey both - thanks for contributing to the Origins Tapes series! Can you start by introducing yourself?

Thanks so much for having us! Hi Origins - we are Ruby & Lily London and we’re a DJ and producer duo who go under the name Daughters of Frank… and yeah we are sisters, our surname is London and our Dad's name is Frank :) You can find us every Wednesday on Rinse where we host our ‘Serenade’ show and @daughtersoffrank for all up-and-coming gigs and future releases.

Tell us about this mix - where was it recorded and favourite track inside?

This mix was recorded around Lil’s, a place where we do most of our practicing, liaising, and heavy debating about what track makes sense in which mix or set. I (Ruby) took the lead on this one as we tend to separate mixes or shows sometimes as it allows us each to have full creative freedom over a project. However, we are constantly sharing ideas and gaining approval from each other so we stay aligned and feed our perfectionist spirit. In terms of my fav track… Really I should say my own productions are my fav tracks but it’s 100000% ’R U IN2 IT? - Mr Mitch’. This one hits so deep and has been stuck in my head since doing the mix.

What is the ideal setting to listen to it?

On the way to your 3rd tinder date, getting ready to go to the club with ya mates, or on a deep thinking solo car journey.

Talk to us about how DOF started - how did you both get into DJing?

I think a big part of finding ourselves down the DJ avenue stems from growing up in a home where music was always a focal point. It was hearing soul love ballads being blared by Mum first thing, the parties in Nan’s Camden town garden, stealing one older brother's explicit versions of hip-hop CDs and the other one’s D&B vinyl, and then it was the rave eventually becoming used as an escape and release from chaos. Since our teens we have both always worked in various jobs in the music/nightlife industry whether it was working on the bar or guestlist, artist liaison, curating playlists, designing T’s for Resident Advisor and the list goes on. I (Ruby) have always been a bedroom DJ and producer from the age of about 19 but never had the guts to play out until Lily moved back from Barcelona about 4 years ago and on her return forced me out of my bedroom! Lily was hosting on Barcelona City FM and when she moved back to London she just said it's time to give this DJ thing a go.

Who are your main musical influences?

Ruby: The list is endless as I value so many artists from different genres. However, as this mix is electronic I'm going to keep it strictly club-focused and say the first few that come straight to mind. DJ Flight, Joy Orbison, Total Science, Black Coffee, Antal, Four Tet & B-Traits.

Lily: We’ve Grown up with a varied musical background but one person that stuck out the most growing up was Trevor Nelson as a selector and a curator. More recently Amy Dabbs is the one.

And your party ‘Club Serenade’ - tell us more about the platform?

Club Serenade is our club night and we usually throw a party twice a year but most definitely always around Valentine’s weekend. At a Club Serenade night, you will hear all genres of electronic music but in a soulful and sultry tone. You will always find an inclusive lineup of artists and we get so excited to hear their approaches to the brief. We promote all forms of love, especially self-love and it's really about just feeling yourself, dancing your heart out, maybe consentingly stealing a kiss, or sharing a dance with someone while listening to the sexiest & deepest cuts.

Favourite place to party in London?

Ruby: I have to say Fabric. This place has given me so many memories over the years and it feels like my club home. I still rave there with the same friends from when I was 19 and it's so significant to us. We will have our first gig there in October and I couldn't be more ready. If I get the chance to play my own tunes in Room 2 I could happily hang up my DJ boots…but I won't of course.

Lily: We go to Fabric a lot, it's one of the only clubs left that we’ve been going to since we first started raving.

Thanks for being a part of the Tapes series!
