Ill Evans Mix

Up next on our Tapes Series for #54 is London-based DJ Ill Evans.

Starting out as an intern at a well known techno label, he soon established a cult following for his party Kindred. After a number of sold out shows, lockdown kicked in, putting his nightlife ventures on ice. Unperturbed though he continued to develop the Kindred brand, opening a shop and radio station in London’s Farringdon area. Broadcasting every Tuesday throughout the day the radio station has hosted high profile names like Peach, Lyster, Mantra, DJ Tasha and DJ Skimask. With the help of his friends, they have managed to stay on air throughout the pandemic. They have also launched a shop at the location where the radio broadcasts take place. The shop specialises in cutting edge underground music and DIY zines. Kindred was recently sited as one of the 100 most important online radio stations in the world by The Wire magazine. Meanwhile he has continued to work with Don’t Be Afraid Recordings, as resident DJ and curator of their Rinse FM show.

Hello hello! Welcome to the Tapes series, Ill Evans :) How are things? Wanna start by introducing yourself and what you do?

Hey! My name’s Jojo and I DJ under the name ILL EVANS, I run a radio station/shop/imprint called Kindred with some of my best friends…

Kindred is literally one of the best spots in London. The community feel is super homely and I really feel like everyone wants to see each other smashing it and doing well - must be nice to know you and Scar have helped make this happen. Describe the shop for those that don’t know.

We’re based on a quiet hill in Clerkenwell, next to the best & oldest photographic shop in London. We sell new and second-hand records, Books, Zines, Cassettes, Clothes and anything else we like! It’s like a room filled with everything we’re into.

Every Tuesday we turn the shop into a radio station, usually streaming for 6 hours from 3pm. We have decks set up in the window and invite 6 regulars/guests. It’s turned into a very social spot with people dropping by to hang out and have a drink, we usually all end up at the pub together after.

What’s your favourite part of running the shop?

Meeting people has been one of the best parts about having this space, in the year and a half we’ve been open I've made some lifelong friendships.

If you haven’t checked it out, I’d highly recommend for anyone that fancies meeting some lovely people, searching for some obscure records, books or even buying some good smelling incense. What does a typical Tuesday at the shop involve in 10 words?

Music, Guinness, Kinder Eggs (a very important Tuesday ritual), Track ID’s, Cable Management, Shop runs.

A lil’ birdie told me you were going to be starting a label. Spill the beans! What kind of sounds will we be hearing on the imprint?

Top secret stuff! Working on a label to launch 2023, it’s a shame we have to wait so long for pressings but I'm sure it’ll be worth it. Over the last few years, I've been figuring out what I’m interested in sonically so it’ll be an expression/extension of that.

Sounds lovely. What do you do outside of Kindred?

I’m a label assistant for DBA Recordings, Occasionally working as a photographer for them also. Yearly I also work as a talent buyer for a couple of festivals curating stages for them and for the last year or so I’ve been running a restaurant in London Fields.

What’s your favourite most recent mix and why?

My most favourite recent mix was probably Ashton Hollands last Kindred set, he’s always pulling out tunes I’ve never heard before and I’m always after an ID haha

Quick fire round: Track to play in a laser tag room at 3.30am.

Drexciya - Black Sea, I heard Toru play this one early hours in the morning at MOT a couple of weeks back and it reminded me how good the song is!

3 names to look out for in 2022.

The Alicia & Jazz super duo
Malvern Brume
Marcy!

Thanks for joining us Jojo!
